Adam Sheetz: "What Now."

UNIT 1 presents:
What Now. The Work of Adam Sheetz
Open reception: 7:00pm-1:00am April 11, 2015
With music by Jangle Leg and Mykal Morrison at 10:00pm.

Lake Worth exhibition space UNIT 1 is pleased to announce: What Now. The Work of Adam Sheetz the premiere solo exhibition of Lake Worth artist Adam Sheetz.
“What Now” will feature provocative paintings and drawings that fearlessly explore the dark and perverse underbelly of human nature. Unabashedly traversing the vast social and cultural landscapes of the present moment, Sheetz wanders through the wreckage of the human project, pointing out with caustic satire the hypocrisy, greed, and selfish motives that drive both institutions and individuals. Nothing is sacred, and Sheetz takes aim at just about anything that is big and moves: organized religion, corporate greed, corrupt politicians, tabloid media, and the misplaced values of our own mob-mentality. Channeling Ralph Steadman, Hieronymus Bosch, and Jean-Michel Basquiat, and aided by his own ample gifts as a draftsman and painter, Sheetz constructs phantasmagoric landscapes that teem with the demonic energies that emerge from the darkest crevasses of our collective soul.

Contemporary culture had reached a point of spiritual exhaustion, the ongoing decay of our morals, sense of decency, and collective good will is impossible to ignore. The dark prophecies of films like Mike Judge’s “Idiocracy” and John Carpenter’s “They Live”, have more or less come to pass, and we find ourselves undeniably in a state of cultural decline. Although Sheetz revels in articulating the dark truth of our moment, in doing so he’s asking us what will our part be in the solution should we chose to consciously move towards a better future. “What Now” is both an indictment of our bad choices and a vivid wake up call for us to realize just how far we've sunk, but its also an opportunity for collective reflection and healing should we summon the courage and motivation to harness our better selves and begin the difficult task of cleaning up this colossal mess.
